Having An ‘Off-Site’ Horse

Living Far From the Barn

While I know many horse owners don’t keep their horse(s) on their own property I’ve always assumed most of the rest live in, or close to, ‘horse country’ where they board.

In a perfect world I’d be able to walk out my backdoor to visit my horse, but alas, city ordinances frown on that. It’s probably a good thing because when I actually got my horse, I found out really quick how much work just housing them is! I once took my horse for a weekend of trail riding where we were required to muck out our horse’s enclosure. Boarding at a my barn I hadn’t realized just how MUCH horses poop!

I’m glad to board my horse with no worries of mucking, feeding and turn out. Due to travel time to the barn I’m only able to get to there three times a week so I want to maximize the time I have by spending it with her and not mucking. But there’s still plenty to worry about when your horse is enjoying the Country life far away and you’re stuck in the City. Is she relaxed and happy?… is she eating OK?… what’s the weather going to be like there – does she need her blanket on/off?… And most importantly if something happens how fast can I get to her?

Fortunately, I board at a wonderful barn with very caring owners and staff. Put’s my mind at ease…mostly.
